Topeak Smarthead Gauge D2

With such a huge variation in the accuracy of track pumps, a dedicated pressure gauge like this neat little gadget is a must. Especially with tubeless systems and big tyres, 5 or 10 psi can be the difference between just right and too much.

So why do you need a pressure gauge like this? For a start, the gauges on most track pumps are pretty inaccurate things. The old fashioned ‘squeeze test’ might pass if you are in a hurry, but it’ll impede the quality of your ride. Large volume tyres like those used on gravel bikes are sensitive to pressure variations. Too high and you’ll have a stiff ride, bouncing like a beach ball down the trail. Too low and the bike will handle sloppily, you may get tyre roll on the rim and a risk of pinch flats.

Go Digital

The Topeak Smarthead Gauge D2 is designed to work with both Presta and Schrader valves without having to change anything on the SmartHead adapter. Just a quick slide of a switch and it’ll fit either. This pocket sized tool provides precise pressure readings up to 250 psi, so about 200 psi higher than you’ll ever need for a gravel tyre! The gauge measures in 1 psi increments allowing you to tune your tyres with super accuracy.

Bold and clear display. Super simple to use.

Power up the Topeak Smarthead Gauge D2, pop it on your tyre valve and wait until it bleeps back at you. I really like the large digital display which is great for at-a-glance viewing. The screen also rotates to get a good view from whatever angle you use the gauge. There is even a bleed valve on the device so you can fine-tune the tyre pressure.

If psi isn’t your measurement of choice, the gauge can also display in bar and kg/cm2 with a single button press. The unit is powered by a single CR2032 cell, which comes included. There is an auto-off function of 30 seconds of inactivity to save the battery life if you accidentally leave it switched on.

Pocketable accuracy. You could even use it on your car!

What the pros say

I asked pro-wheel builder, Ben of Sharp Precision Wheels for his opinion on the Topeak Smarthead Gauge D2. We were mighty impressed with his Gravel Wheels and as someone, who obsesses over fine tuning, who better to ask?

Getting your tyre pressures dialled in accurately is critical to ensuring the maximum performance of your wheelset. With the prevalence of wide rims lowering optimum tyre pressures, this has never been more important. A good digital gauge like the Topeak Smarthead Gauge D2 will mean you’re always at the right pressure.Ben Sharp

Overall

One of the easiest to use digital pressure gauges on the market. Even if it is just for peace of mind, or when you travel and don’t use your own pump, it will last forever and is a good addition to the toolbox.

Sycophantic waffle. You establish the case for a handheld pressure guage by criticising the accuracy of track pump guages – without any evidence or testing. Based again on no testing you claim to have found the answer in this device. Your star witness, Ben Sharp, is careful with his words and avoids setting this device above others since clearly, he knows his expertise is building wheels, not testing pressure guages.

There is nothing in this review that I could not find in the manufacturer’s blurb.
